The Uganda Prisons Service has dismissed allegations that inmates at Mbale Main prison, Maluku are sodomized.

The allegations were made at an HIV stakeholders meeting organized by Most At Risk Populations Initiative (MARPI) held at Rocy Hotel in Mbale City.

Robert Wandwasi the Mbale District/City HIV Focal Person said that several reports by medical personnel show that some inmates present complications and on further interrogation they reportedly point to sodomy by fellow inmates. Wandwasi says this leaves the inmates exposed to dangers of contracting HIV.

Maureen Ninsiima the Officer in charge Mbale Main Prison, Maluku however dismisses the allegations saying that she has not received any reports regarding acts of sodomy amongst inmates. According to Ninsiima, all the inmates are tested on admission and once found positive, they are enrolled on Anti-Retroviral Treatment(ART).
