A senior National Resistance Movement (NRM)
cadre says the party’s top organs will decide on who becomes the party’s
presidential flag bearer in the 2026 general elections.
Michael Werikhe a former trade state minister says the
various NRM organs like the Central Executive Committee (CEC) will determine
whether President Yoweri Museveni returns as its party flag bearer or a
successor is picked.
This comes as General Muhoozi Kainerugaba under his MK
movement continues to traverse the country mobilizing the masses into several
development projects with the opposition accusing him of engaging in partisan
politics yet he is still a serving military officer. Muhoozi through his
twitter handle said he would stand for the presidency in 2026. He also said that he would be retiring from
the Army this year in what most people believe is in preparation for his
presidential bid.
But Werikhe, also the former Bungokho County South
legislators says that anyone with intentions of vying for leadership in the NRM
must follow the laid out constitutional provisions of the party. He however
says that anyone is free to vie for the presidency as an independent.
According to Werikhe, despite the fact that President
Yoweri Museveni is yet to pronounce himself on the matter, if he finally
expresses interest to continue vying for the country’s top most job and the
party feels he still has much to offer, they will back him.
