The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, on Sunday officially launched St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Buhugu in Sironko district.

St. Matthew’s Cathedral is the seat of the North Mbale Diocese, which was created in 1997 and serves the Anglican communities of Sironko and Bulambuli. The construction of the cathedral, which took five years, cost a total of 5 billion shillings.

During the launch, Archbishop Kaziimba expressed his gratitude to the Christians, political leaders, and well-wishers who supported the funding and completion of the church building. He particularly hailed the Budadiri West Member of Parliament, Nathan Nandala Mafabi who contributed 80 percent of the total cost of the construction.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in a speech delivered by Raphael Magyezi, the Minister for Local Government, urged religious leaders to partner with the government in encouraging people to embrace national programs such as the Parish Development Model and Emyoga, which aim to improve household incomes.

Bishop Samuel Gidudu of North Mbale Diocese called on Bugisu’s Members of Parliament, under the Bugisu Parliamentary Group, to unite and present a single voice to the government to ensure the region receives its fair share of national resources. He cited the recent cabinet reshuffle, in which Bugisu was allocated only two state ministerial positions, as an example of the need for more unity and advocacy.

Nathan Nandala Mafabi thanked all those who contributed financially to the construction of St. Matthew’s Cathedral.
