Musoto Primary School, a government-aided primary School in Mbale City Northern city division is battling a congestion of learners.

Stephen Washaki, the School head teacher, says that the congestion follows an increased enrollment of learners this year. According to Washaki, the school enrollment was 1,741 as of Friday, February 17th, 2023, and the number is expected to increase as the community continues sending in more pupils.

Currently, there are approximately 250 pupils per classroom. According to Washaki, in addition to the problem of space, they also have a limited number of desks. Five pupils are forced to share one desk, and each class has between 40-50 desks. Washaki says that the increased number of pupils has also worsened the problem of staffing.

Washaki asked the government to consider adding more teachers to the school so as to improve learning.

The Mbale City Education Officer, Francis Kooko, says the education department is planning to construct some classrooms at different schools and Musoto primary school is one of the beneficiaries.
