There were protests by Village Health Teams (VHTs) and LC1 Chairpersons in Butiru Sub County, Butiru Town Council and Mayefwe Sub County as the distribution of mosquito nets kicked off in Manafwa District.

The protesters alleged that their allowances were too compared to other officials. Some LC1s and VHTs questioned the disparity in the allowances, refusing to work until the Manafwa District leaders provided an explanation.

According to Ministry of Health guidelines, VHTs will receive 66,000 shillings for three days' work, LC1 chairpersons will get 44,000 shillings for two days, while Sub County Community Development Officers and health workers will receive 154,000 shillings for seven days' work.

Manafwa District Health Officer Ephraim Nakhokho clarified that as per the Health Ministry guidelines, LC1s and VHTs are not entitled to the same allowances as Community Development Officers and health workers.

Nakhokho says despite challenges over allowances, the distribution of the mosquito nets is going well in all Sub Counties, urging locals to effectively use the nets the fight against malaria.
