The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa has revealed that he has received reports about death threats to MPs.

According to Tayebwa, some of the threats are related to their involvement in the ongoing investigation of the National Council of Sports.

Tayebwa’s revelation came after the Tororo Woman MP, Sarah Opendi said that she had received threatening messages from an individual reportedly under the ‘Association of tired officers in Uniform Uganda.’ Opendi told Parliament that the individual identified himself as Congo Bajo warning her as the next target.

The threats which have been reportedly sent to several other members through letters, accuse MPs of failing to handle issues concerning the welfare of officers in uniform. According to the MP, the association members claim to include, army officers, teachers, police officers, and health workers. Opendi said she was given a seven days ultimatum to pay the ‘association’ 10 million Shillings lest she faces the consequences.

Following her statement, Tayebwa said that he had received other reports of threats from MPs.
He condemned the threats, saying that MPs are mandated to play their oversight role.
Tayebwa tasked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to investigate and apprehend the culprits since they use phones with registered numbers.
