The Uganda Police Chief Political Commissar Bamunoba Ubaldo has asked police officers to protect children in conflict with the law from any action that may endanger their wellbeing.

Bamunoba sounded the call at the beginning of a two-day training for child and family protection officers and record officers drawn from Elgon, East Kyoga, Busoga North and Bukedi South. The training was held at Mbale Court’s View Hotel in Mbale City.

Bamunoba said it is important for police officers to understand the juvenile system in their country so as to process the children through the system without violating the established principles and procedures put in place to protect the children.

He said the training aimed at equipping police officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to handle juvenile cases in a manner that promotes the best interests of the child, aligns with juvenile justices system and prioritizes rehabilitation over punitive measures.

The training is mainly focusing on diversion of children cases while avoiding formal judicial proceedings whenever appropriate.

Rogers Taitika the Elgon Regional Police Spokesman says the training will help to increase the diversion of children cases and therefore reduce the number of child offenders in prison.
