At least 127 people have died after floods and landslides hit Rwanda's northern and western province, authorities say.

Western province governor François Habitegeko said that many houses collapsed on people. He added that main roads in the area are not usable because of landslides.

The casualty numbers are expected to increase as floodwaters continue to rise.

A resident of one of the flooded areas who escaped her home before it collapsed said she is afraid it will rain again.

Rwanda's president offered his condolences to those who have been affected. His statement also added that residents were being evacuated from "affected and high-risk areas".
