Traders
in Kapchorwa Municipality have returned to the old central market that was
destroyed by fire, citing delays in completing construction of temporary stalls
at the new market site.
The
traders, including vegetable dealers, second-hand clothes and shoe vendors, and
boutique operators, say they have waited too long for the Kapchorwa Municipal
Council to fulfill its promise of constructing temporary structures to house
them. The fire, which destroyed property worth millions of shillings in
January, left many vendors without a source of income, pushing them deeper into
debt and economic despair.
Flomena Chebet, a vegetable vendor, says
they were left with no option but to return to the unsafe and unstructured
grounds of the burnt market.
Alex Woniala, the Chairperson of the
Kapchorwa Central Market Vendors Association, said traders have made several
appeals to the municipal leadership, but with no concrete response.
Lemifter Amiri, the Assistant Senior Town
Clerk for Central Division, where the market is located, urged the vendors to
remain patient, saying the matter is being handled administratively.
